NickGPT - Get help from a real human, not AI!
What is NickGPT?
NickGPT is our attempt at warning people about the dangers of using an AI chatbot as a therapist.
My name is Nick Jonsson and I’m passionate about helping people who may be struggling - my main focus has been on providing counselling, therapy and recovery support for leaders who might be afraid to ask for help.
My own work has been shaped by my lived journey through burnout, addiction and recovery. I have a particular speciality in helping leaders and other professionals who may be quietly struggling with things like anxiety, depression, and even a loss of purpose.
Many people (particularly men) have jumped onto services like ChatGPT, Claude and Google Gemini, and have slowly built up relationships with these tech platforms. Some have begun using them as a form of therapy. I believe even that some people are utilising AI as a form of outsourcing therapy, to avoid having to pay real therapists.
NickGPT is my way of trying to push back against this over reliance upon technology, in particular AI, when it comes to dealing with real human problems.
In essence - I am here, as a human, to offer my help, if you need someone to listen to you. NickGPT is here to warn people of the dangers of relying too heavily on AI as a substitute for a real (trained or licensed) therapist.
Problems with using AI bots as a therapist
There is a scary amount of articles on the web which frame AI chatbots as being a potential source of free therapy. Many articles seem to take a very balanced look - “The Pros and Cons of using ChatGPT as a form of therapy” might be one such article. This is a very dangerous take because it implies (strongly) that there can be a place for it as a replacement for a real human therapist. In my opinion, articles on this topic should be stronger and make a more forceful statement here: that it is incredibly dangerous to do this.
Reasons why you shouldn’t use ChatGPT as your therapist:
AI tools will not offer real true empathy, and wont ever be able to
They lack clinical accountability
They can (and have) provide harmful advice
They can reinforce delusions someone may be suffering from
They do not handle crises well at all (they cannot!)
They pose significant privacy and safety risks
Have been shown to foster dangerous dependency, which can lead to emotional damage
