Nick Jonsson Featured on Where Parents Talk: From Rock Bottom to Resilience
Nick Jonsson, Founder of Limitless, bestselling author of Executive Loneliness, accredited counsellor, psychotherapist and sober coach, joined Lianne Castelino on Where Parents Talk for a conversation about hustle culture, recovery, and rebuilding a relationship with his son. The show is made for parents and caregivers and draws on science, evidence and lived experience.
Nick grew up in Sweden in a family where working harder was the answer to everything. He was in construction at fourteen and never learned to ask for help, because asking had never been part of the model. Alcohol entered later as a way to wind down after demanding days managing hospitals and clinics, and it worked for years before it became the thing he used to cope. Warning signs appeared a decade before he stopped, including hospital visits after heavy weekends that nobody connected to his drinking.
For parents, the most useful part is what he says about his son. Nick was absent for two to three years. His son was six and living in Sweden while Nick was in Singapore, and by the time Nick was sober the boy barely knew him. Working with a child psychologist, he started by learning his son's hobbies, teachers and friends' names so he could hold a real conversation. Then he learned to play multiplayer Minecraft, and logged on every Saturday for three hours. That went on for three years, with his son leading and Nick following. As he puts it, you have to come into their world rather than drag them into yours. The full amends came later.
Nick also walks through his five-step resilience framework — surrender, purpose, connection, goals, discipline — and explains why removing a habit without replacing it rarely holds. He closes on practical ground: do an honest audit of your own life, do your own work before bringing a hard conversation to your family, and remember that while AI can help you find the right person to talk to, talking to an AI is not vulnerability.
